The race for the #QLDElection2020 finish line is on, with tomorrow being Election Day. If you’re a late starter, and are heading to the polls tomorrow, here’s a few key tips to bear in mind.

We chat with Brett “Beaver” Neal today, who has been busy covering every nook and cranny of the Gulf on her “listening tour” in the lead up to election day tomorrow. Brett has worked on North Queensland cattle stations, with Indigenous youth and has been a prominent sportswoman with Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent traveling around the North-West.

We chat with Cynthia Lui of the ALP today, incumbent Member for the Cook electorate. Cynthia was inspired to join the political world because grown up in the northernmost region of Australia, she was acutely aware of the tyranny of distance for people in remote and regional communities. Cynthia has devoted her life and career to help closing the gap between the regions. She describes one of the most rewarding things about being the Member for Cook is that she has played a role in achieving greater outcomes in health and educational services to all communities in Cook, including those in the more remote areas.

An exceptional group of individuals and organisations have joined forces with a single purpose: to collect living specimens of the world’s coral species and preserve them in a ‘coral ark’, creating a true legacy for future generations.

A COMMUNITY group will be formed to monitor recreational all-terrain vehicle use at Wonga Beach and report issues to Douglas Shire Council under a new interim foreshore management plan. Council has adopted an Interim Wonga Beach Foreshore Management Plan which allows Wonga Beach residents to use quad bikes in an environmentally-sensitive manner on sections of the 10.5km stretch of coastline.

LOCAL golfers can continue to swing their clubs around the Mossman Golf Course with a crop of keen players hitting the sweet spot under a new lease arrangement. Douglas Shire Council resolved to buy the golf course land and facilities from Douglas Shire Community and Sports Club Inc, with the new lease giving local golfers a firm grip on the future of the site.

Registrations are now open for an amazing opportunity to clean-up some of those hard to get to islands and bays of Far North Queensland. This trip will include a small group of volunteers travelling with Wavelength Reef Cruises to clean-up several locations between Port Douglas and Cooktown over three days. Depending on the weather, we plan to go to the Hope Islands, Cedar Bay and a couple more islands in between.

We chat with Tanika today, a North Queenslander through and through. Born in Townsville, raised in the Cape and then returning to Townsville for boarding school and university, Tanika is a Registered Nurse who cares deeply about the community and Queensland’s north. Tanika lives in Mowbray with her partner Doug.
