With stinger nets back in place on our local beaches, attention turns once again to the “stinger season”. In a promising development, researchers from James Cook University in Cairns have demonstrated, for the first time, the potential for off-the-shelf drones to be used to detect these deadly box jellyfish.

An exceptional group of individuals and organisations have joined forces with a single purpose: to collect living specimens of the world’s coral species and preserve them in a ‘coral ark’, creating a true legacy for future generations.

Registrations are now open for an amazing opportunity to clean-up some of those hard to get to islands and bays of Far North Queensland. This trip will include a small group of volunteers travelling with Wavelength Reef Cruises to clean-up several locations between Port Douglas and Cooktown over three days. Depending on the weather, we plan to go to the Hope Islands, Cedar Bay and a couple more islands in between.

HSBC Australia and the Queensland Government have been announced as the first-ever private and public sector buyers of Reef Credits, a tradable unit that quantifies and values the work of landholders to improve water quality flowing onto the Great Barrier Reef. The first water quality market of its kind in the world, Reef Credits will play a pivotal role in protecting the future of the Great Barrier Reef as both an Australian and international icon.

Every third week of October, the Australian Water Association organises National Water Week and makes a splash across Australia, inspiring individuals, communities and organisations to build awareness around the value of water. Access to clean water is hugely important to our daily lives, and it’s down to all of us to protect our water environments and resources, and use water wisely.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation are closing off Reef Clean Month with another push to the community to register a site along the Great Barrier Reef catchment for a clean-up. Tangaroa Blue, through the ReefClean Project, is calling on citizen scientists, schools, community groups, local governments, and all ocean lovers to participate in the GBR Clean-up.

Converse has teamed up with local Sydney artist, Elliott Routledge, to paint a mural in Woolloomooloo, Sydney, that not only cleans the air but also helps plant trees in Australia’s Daintree Rainforest. The design for the mural was created in collaboration with Rainforest Rescue
and draws inspiration from the fauna and flora of the Daintree, promoting the message that ‘Trees are the Answer’.

Look up just after sunset, as soon as it gets really dark, to see as many as ten shooting stars per hour. You’ll be viewing the Draconid meteor shower, which occurs when Earth passes through the stream of debris from Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner. The shower is so-named because the meteors shoot from the radiance of  Draco the dragon constellation.

Five new environmental projects for the Tropical Far North are the “first step towards a ‘green’ economic recovery for the region.” The Queensland Government has provided nearly $4 million for five Reef Assist projects that will create jobs while protecting wetlands, improving wildlife corridors, stabilising creek banks and making the region more resilient to natural disasters.
