Is a bridge still on the agenda? Is Council going to buy the ferry and operate it? What are they going to do about the traffic queues? How much is all this going to cost the ratepayer?

Councillors have asked the CEO to provide critical final details for the Daintree River crossing options which will be tabled at a final Special Council Meeting early next week.

❝If it is to avoid being landed with no ferry at all post June 30, Council will have to buy, hire or contract a ferry or service in the next few weeks. ❞

The Douglas Shire Council put out an interim ferry tender for the Daintree River crossing on 9 February, 2021. The tender closed on 9 March, 2021 with the decision expected to be made 23 March, 2021. A month later, and the Douglas community have not heard anything.

The Daintree Ferry priority lane will re-open from Monday 5 April  to make it easier for Douglas locals to cross the river during the upcoming Easter holidays.

Last week Douglas Shire Councillors considered the results of its recent survey about options for crossing the Daintree. The survey results confirm the views of DSSG members that a bridge is neither required nor desired and that this community prefers conservation over development. Two thirds of those surveyed said they preferred a two ferry system.
